Car Accidents and Whiplash

“Whiplash” is basically soft tissue damage to the neck or upper back; while you can get whiplash on a ride, while cycling or even while playing sports, the most common cause is an automobile accident. A car that is going in one direction and comes to a sudden, violent stop causes your body to stay in place, while your head whips forward, painfully overextending the neck.

Whiplash can occur in a rear end accident too, even if your car is stationare; the sudden forward motion can jar your neck and cause damage and pain that lasts for months. On another part of the body, this type of injury could be called a strain or sprain.

Car Accident / Injury / Whiplash Information: Symptoms of Whiplash

It might take a few days for all symptoms to show up; whiplash symptoms may not be present immediately after an accident. No matter how you end up with the condition, whiplash causes one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Neck or upper back pain
  • Reduced movement or inability to turn the head as usual
  • Dizziness or light headedness
  • Blurred vision
  • Pain that extends to the shoulder or upper arm, or pain when the arm is raised
  • Tingling or feeling like the arm, shoulder or neck is falling asleep
  • Cognitive issues, including trouble concentrating or recalling events

Help for Whiplash

Get medical assistance: Since it takes time for the symptoms to show up, you should seek out medical attention for your neck or back if you have been in an accident. Failure to treat a neck injury, including whiplash, could make it worse. Visit the ER or your own doctor promptly to learn the extent of your injuries and get the treatment you need.

Document everything: Make sure you get a copy of the police report, take photos of the accident site and of your vehicle. You should also record the contact information for the other party and for any witnesses to the incident. If you’ve visited the doctor, you’ll also have medical records to support your claim.

Seek out assistance: The insurance company may not realize the severity of your injury or the way it impacts your life. A personal injury attorney can help protect your rights and ensure you are being treated fairly.
